The United States is calling for an end to boozy budget meetings at the UN General Assembly.

The marathon budget meetings take place every December to lay out spending plans for the following year, and U.S. diplomats say they have had enough of the drinking that sometimes goes on beforehand.

Diplomats who spoke to Agence France Presse on condition of anonymity say envoys have attended “falling down drunk.”  “On one occasion the note-taker who was meant to be recording the talks was so intoxicated he had to be replaced,” another diplomat said.

Budget concerns in the U.S. and other Western countries are contributing to new pressures to minimize spending by the global body.
