Wild gunfire broke out outside a Newark nightclub and when the smoke cleared three men, including an off duty Essex County Sheriffs Department Officer, had suffered gunshot wounds.

Witnesses say there was chaos on Springfield Avenue between 13th and 14th street early Thursday morning.

It all started inside a club called Mercedes and Minks where prosecutors say there was an altercation between the officer and two men that spilled outside.  As the officer was leaving , he was confronted by 2 individuals outside.

At least one of the individuals produced a hand gun and started firing at the officer.  The officer returned fire.

Shakir Muhammed was working inside a gas station that is located in the middle of the crime scene.

It sounded like firecrackers in rapid succession Bop bop bop bop bop. Like 2 people exchanging gunfire.   The unidentified officer and the 2 men were all hit. They were rushed to University Hospital and are expected to survive.

The investigation is continuing.
