Smith Haven mall evacuated and shut down after structural weakness causes flooding

(LAKE GROVE) – The Smith Haven Mall was evacuated at approximately 4 p.m. by the Fire Marshall as a precaution according to a spokesperson for the mall.

A firefighter on the scene told PIX 11 News they received a call at a approximately 2 p.m. with regards to severe water issues involving the roof.

The spokesperson for the mall stated that New York & Company which is located in the lifestyle section of the mall initially reported water coming into the store.

Officials responded and decided to close off some of the surrounding stores.  However the rest of the mall remained open.

Minutes later the decision was made to close down the entire mall and evacuate all shoppers after sporadic leaks were reported in at least 25 stores.  The mall itself houses 140.

There was no roof collapse according to the spokesperson who did confirm to PIX 11 News that there were workers on the roof of the 43-year-old structure on Sunday to remove snow.

Multiple first-responders were on the scene from various communities to assist in the operation.
