LONG ISLAND (PIX11) – Nassau County police made a bizarre discovery of two dead bodies while responding to a call for a gas leak.

It all began around 6:30 Monday night when cops got a 911 call for the gas leak at 171 Sussex Road. When they arrived, they smelled no odor of gas and got no answer at the door.

After entering the home to make sure no one was hurt – cops made the shocking discovery of two people with gunshot wounds.   Inside was a 46-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man who were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Police quickly turned this normally quiet street into a crime scene and began collecting evidence.

Neighbors PIX11 spoke to say this was a couple who lived inside and moved to the neighborhood about twenty years ago.

“I am just shocked,” said Richard Louis who lives directly across the street and said he heard no gunshots.   He also says the woman who was shot was an attorney, and hopes that her job wasn’t connected to this shooting.

Neighbors also say the couple had three children – two boys and a girl who are believed to be in college.

Nassau County police have not released the identities of the victims at this time and only are saying their investigation is ongoing.
