NEW ORLEANS (PIX11) – He was the mayor at the helm of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, thrusting him into the national spotlight, but now former Mayor Ray Nagin is being charged with using his time in office for personal gain, accepting payoffs and free trips,  all while his city struggled to recover from the devastating storm.

Nagin was indicted Friday with 21 counts of corruption, including six counts of bribery, one count of conspiracy, one count of money laundering, four counts of filing false tax returns and a whopping nine counts of deprivation of honest services though wire fraud.

Federal authorities say Nagin accepted more than $160,000 in bribes and truckloads of free granite for his family’s business.

Shortly after the indictment, current mayor Mitch Landrieu released a statement, calling it a “sad day for the city of New Orleans.”
