It was a sad morning for students coming to Kearny High School Friday as they learned of their friend and fellow classmate, 16-year-old Alishia Colon’s death.
News of Colon’s death quickly spread on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook Thursday night as friends put out a message to wear black today to remember the teen.
Details of what exactly happened are still unknown. However, according to friends, Colon was shot to death Thursday sometime before 7p.m.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s office and Kearny police confirm they were called to the 200 block of Belgrove Drive for reports of shots fired, and discovered the dead teenager.
As of this time, police have not said how the shooting happened or if there are any arrests.
Speaking to PIX11 this morning, Kearny School Superintendent Frank Ferraro said that the school was providing grief counselors today to help student’s cope with the news of the death. Ferraro also wanted to urge parents the school was safe, and this was an incident that took place off campus and posed no threat to the school.
