JERSEY CITY (PIX11) – Half a dozen people were injured Monday after the escalator they were riding suddenly changed directions, causing them to crash into each other at the bottom of the stairwell.

The incident happened during the morning rush hour at the Exchange PATH station in Jersey City just before 9 a.m.

Video of the incident, which surfaced on YouTube, shows passengers riding the escalator when it suddenly jerks in the opposite direction. Screams for help can be heard as riders start moving downward, toppling onto each other.

According to Port Authority officials, 6 people were injured during the chaos, five of which were transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Officials are still trying to determine what caused the freak accident.
