An 11-year-old Utah boy caught with a gun at West Kearns Elementary School in Salt Lake City, Utah, told administrators his parents gave him the gun for protection after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut.
He was confronted by teachers and administrators after other students claimed that he was pointing the weapon at them during recess, according to the Toronto Star.
“He points it to me and my friend’s head, and says he’s going to kill us,” said one girl. “But then I said, ‘I’m going to go tell,’ and he said, ‘If you tell, I’m going to kill you.'”
The boy later told administrators that his parents gave him the .22-calibre handgun for self defense, however his parents deny it.
The gun was unloaded, according to Granite School District Spokesman Ben Horsley, and the boy had ammunition in his backpack.
No one was injured.
