NEW YORK (PIX11) – After fare hearings, some public comment, and much speculation, officials with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority are finalizing the new fare structure riders of buses, subways and trains will see in March 2013.
4 proposals were unveiled in October and a period of public comment followed. They were designed to present a number of options and allow the board to create a final version that included a combination of their suggestions. In total, the final package is expected to raise about $400 million dollars.
Proposals include leaving the base fare at $2.25 or increasing it to $2.50. New rates for express buses, railroads, and unlimited weekly and monthy cards will also be set.
The MTA will not confirm reports that a final decision has been made to increase the base fare to $2.50 and set the unlimited monthly card at $112.
In a statement, the MTA says the reports are premature. “The Chairman is discussing alternatives with the board and will be making his recommendation in writing to the board in a communication to be sent later this week (or over the weekend),” says MTA spokesperson Kevin Ortiz. The board will vote on the at next full board meeting on December 19th.
