NEW YORK (PIX11)— After surviving the fierce winds and torrential rains of Superstorm Sandy, an 80-foot Norway spruce was en route to Midtown Manhattan Wednesday to take on the role of this season’s Rockefeller Christmas tree.

The 10-ton tree which hails from Mount Olive, New Jersey was loaded on a flatbed truck Tuesday from property owned by Joseph Balku.

According to Balku, the tree violently swayed back and fourth during the storm last month, but managed to pull through.

After it is erected at Rockefeller Center, workers are expected to string 45,000 lights on the branches.

The annual tree lighting spectacular, which will celebrate its 80th anniversary this year, will be held on Nov. 28.
