LONG ISLAND (PIX11)— The Long Island Authority has restored power to 99 percent of customers who lost power in wake of Hurricane Sandy and the recent Nor’easter, the utility announced Tuesday.

The progress brings the total of restored customers to over 1.1 million, while 10,136 outages remain in Nassau (6,545) and Suffolk County (3,591).

According to LIPA, although power is available, up to 8,000 customers in Nassau and Suffolk and 27,000 in the Rockaways are unable to safely receive power without customer repairs.

Once customers make the necessary repairs to their homes and can safely accept power, the utility says they can expect to have power re-established in less than 48 hours and in many cases they will see power restored that same day.
