NYPD “eye in the sky” set up to prevent crimes related to the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

By MIKE GILLIAM | @pix11mike MIDLAND BEACH, STATEN ISLAND (WPIX)— In the wake of Sandy, we have seen the best of New Yorkers and we have seen the worst. We’ve watched people on Staten Island extend a hand to lift a neighbor but we’ve also seen people arrested for ripping each other off — looting.

But the cops are on the case. The NYPDIS responding on Staten Island by deploying mobile observation towers to deter looters.One located at Olympia Blvd. and Midland Avenue watched over the Midland Beachneighborhood hard hit by Sandy. But looting has been a problem since right after the storm hit. With people out of their homes thieves have been going door to door in the darkness pretending to help while looking for easy marks.Cops say over all crime is down but burglaries are up in the wake of Sandy. They’ll use choppers, the towers, and increased patrols to keep the bad guys in check.
