Disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner, who was at the center of a sexting scandal, has returned to Twitter — and it was Hurricane Sandy that brought him back.
After nearly a year and a half of going off the grid, Weiner’s Twitter handle, @repweiner, came alive again Wednesday when he tweeted a link to a YouTube video about the devastation Hurricane Sandy left on the Rockaways.
The video, titled “Rockaway Needs Us,” features a voice message left by a Rockaway Beach resident. She describes her neighborhood as looking “like a scene from some end of the world movie” as the video shows sights like the destroyed boardwalk, mounds of sand in streets and residents in disbelief.
Up until his resignation in 2011, Weiner had represented New York City’s 9th District since 1999. The district includes several neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, including communities in the Zone A evacuation area such as the Rockaways and Sheepshead Bay, and Zone A border neighborhoods like Gerritsen Beach. These areas were the hardest hit by Sandy.
The 9th District is now represented by republican Bob Turner.
